Πριν τη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας, ο Θεμιστοκλής εξαπάτησε τον Ξέρξη, στέλνοντας επιστολή στην οποία λεγόταν ότι οι Αθηναίοι ήταν τρομοκρατημένοι και τρέπονταν σε φυγή. Με τον τρόπο αυτόν, ο Θεμιστοκλής δελέασε τους Πέρσες να επιτεθούν, με αποτέλεσμα να τους κατασπαράξει. Η τακτική αυτή του Θεμιστοκλή θυμίζει το signalling, μια έννοια της Βιολογίας που περιγράφει διαδικασίες στο ζωικό βασίλειο, μεταξύ ζώων. Στο signalling, ένα ζώο μπορεί σκόπιμα να εξαπατήσει ένα άλλο, στέλνοντας ψευδή μηνύματα για τον εαυτό του. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, το ζώο που εξαπατά το άλλο ζώο βρίσκεται σε θέση ισχύος, καθώς κατέχει μια αληθέστερη άποψη της πραγματικότητας. Η τέχνη της εξαπάτησης φαίνεται να κατέχει περίοπτη θέση και στη λεγόμενη "πιάτσα". Στα Παιδιά της Πιάτσας, ο Τσιφόρος δίνει τη συμβουλή: "να δείχνεις δράμια 10 και να ζυγίζεις οκάδες 100".
